Sclerotherapy is not just a cosmetic procedure. Vein disease can
cause many health problems such as blood clots, venous eczema, skin
breakdown and ulceration and rarely, skin cancers.
The treatment consists of a solution, which is injected into the vein called a
sclerosant. It causes the vein to close by irritating the blood vessel so that
it swells and closes. This process causes the veins to fade and eventually
they can no longer be seen. Some vessels will have vanished by the time
the support stockings are removed.
Each vein may require several injections, given some weeks apart. Multiple
veins can be injected in one treatment session. Allergic reactions to the
sclerosing solution are very rare.
Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy
Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (UGS) uses ultrasound to locate the
underlying leaking veins and aims to seal off the leakage points. The leakage
could come from small ‘perforating veins' that are usually below the knees, or
main valves behind the knees or in the groin.
The injection uses a fine needle that causes a barely noticeable pinprick
feeling. Some people experience a slight to moderate burning feeling
immediately after the injection, but this disappears after a few seconds.
Laser Treatment of Spider Veins
New technology in laser treatments can effectively treat spider veins in the
legs. Laser surgery sends very strong bursts of light onto the vein. This can
makes the vein slowly fade and disappear. Lasers are very direct and
accurate. So the proper laser controlled by a skilled doctor will usually only
damage the area being treated. Most skin types and colors can be safely
treated with lasers.
Laser surgery is more appealing to some patients because it does not use
needles or incisions. Still, when the laser hits the skin, the patient feels a heat
sensation that can be quite painful. Cooling helps reduce the pain. Laser
treatments last for 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on the severity of the veins,
two to five treatments are generally needed to remove spider veins in the
legs. Patients can return to normal activity right after treatment, just as with
sclerotherapy. For spider veins larger than 3 mm, laser therapy is not very
practical.
